Mbappé’s Historic Golden Boot Win

Kylian Mbappé has achieved a significant milestone, becoming the first player to win the World Cup Golden Boot twice. The France forward was the top scorer at the 2026 World Cup, netting 10 goals across eight matches. This achievement follows his previous win at Qatar 2022, where he also finished as the top scorer with eight goals, making him a back-to-back Golden Boot winner.

Mbappé’s impressive goal tally of 10 in a single tournament places him among an elite group of players. He is the first player since Gerd Muller in 1970 to reach double figures for World Cup goals. Only Just Fontaine, who scored 13 goals for France in 1958, has scored more individual goals in a single tournament. With a total of 22 goals, Mbappé is now the men’s World Cup all-time leading scorer, surpassing Lionel Messi.

His journey to the Golden Boot included two goals in the bronze medal match, where France finished fourth after a defeat against England. Despite his individual success, Mbappé expressed a preference for playing in the final. He scored twice against Senegal and Iraq in the group stage, as well as against Sweden in the last 32. Further goals came against Paraguay in the last 16, including a 70th-minute winner from a penalty, and against Morocco in the quarter-finals.

Spain Dominates Individual Awards

While Mbappé secured the Golden Boot, World Cup champions Spain swept the majority of the other individual awards. Rodri, the team captain and a midfielder for Manchester City, was named the best player of the tournament, earning the Golden Ball award. Rodri received the award from Fifa president Gianni Infantino following the final match in New Jersey. This marks his third major individual accolade, having previously won the Ballon d’Or in 2023 and the Uefa Euro 2024 Player of the Tournament.

Unai Simon, Spain’s goalkeeper, was awarded the Golden Glove for best goalkeeper. He conceded only one goal across eight games and maintained seven clean sheets throughout the tournament. Simon’s performance was crucial for Spain, who were crowned champions. The Athletic Club stopper was only beaten by Belgium’s Charles de Ketelaere in the quarter-final tie.

The award for the tournament’s best young player went to Pau Cubarsi, a 19-year-old centre-back from Barcelona. Cubarsi was a key component of the Spanish defence, which allowed only one goal during the entire tournament. He played every minute for Spain, contributing to their success in emulating their 2010 World Cup victory.

Golden Boot Race and Other Top Scorers

The race for the Golden Boot involved several prominent players. Lionel Messi, despite his extensive list of individual honours, was still seeking his first World Cup Golden Boot. He concluded the tournament with eight goals in as many matches. Messi could have surpassed Mbappé with a hat-trick in the final, but he did not score as Argentina was defeated 1-0 by Spain in New Jersey.

Other notable scorers included England’s Jude Bellingham and Erling Haaland of Norway, both of whom scored seven goals. France forward Ousmane Dembele and England captain Harry Kane each scored six goals. Kane, a previous Golden Boot winner in 2018, was among the leading scorers again.

The FIFA World Cup 2026 Golden Boot standings highlighted the competition among these top players. Mbappé’s consistent threat, combining speed, finishing, and movement, was a significant factor in his success. His partnership with Michael Olise, who provided five assists for Mbappé, also played a key role. Messi continued to score from various positions on the pitch, also contributing four assists. Bellingham’s goals primarily came from inside the penalty area, showcasing his ability to arrive late and capitalize on opportunities. Kane’s six goals included three headed goals and two from the penalty spot.

Messi received the Silver Ball as the second-best player, while Mbappé was named the Bronze Ball winner. Spain’s victory marked their second men’s World Cup triumph, with the team’s strong defensive performance and individual accolades underscoring their dominance in the tournament.
