India opener Rohit Sharma has addressed speculation regarding his international future, affirming his commitment to representing his country. His comments followed a recent performance where he scored 138 runs off 110 balls in the third and final one-day international against England, a match that some reports suggested could be his last in Indian colours.
The 39-year-old batter has consistently expressed his intention to participate in the ICC World Cup in 2027, which is scheduled to be co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. That’s what I have been told to do since my debut, so that’s what I am going to do,” Sharma stated. Sharma emphasised that the external discussions do not significantly impact him. “So it doesn’t really matter too much. What matters is what I do on the field, try and contribute to the success of the team. That’s all my focus is right now. And let the noise be there. If there is no noise, there is no fun,” he added, highlighting his dedication to on-field contributions.
Despite Sharma’s century, India ultimately lost the match to England by 27 runs, conceding the ODI series 2-1. The match at Lord’s saw India chasing a substantial total, and while Sharma’s innings was a strong effort, it was not enough to secure a victory.
The match also saw Sharma become the first Indian player to score an ODI century at Lord’s. He now has eight ODI centuries in England, placing him alongside Marcus Trescothick in second position, with Joe Root holding the top spot with ten centuries.
