FIFA unveils World Cup Dream XI after tournament concludes

Following the conclusion of the FIFA World Cup 2026, which saw Spain defeat Argentina 1-0 in extra time in New Jersey, the tournament’s top performers have been recognized. FIFA has revealed its official Dream XI, selected through a global fan vote, highlighting standout players from the six-week competition held across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

The selection is heavily influenced by the teams that reached the semi-finals, with Spain, France, and Argentina dominating the lineup. Despite England securing a third-place finish, only one player from their squad made it into the Dream XI.

Dream XI Selections Highlight Top Performers

Jude Bellingham is the sole representative for England in the Dream XI. His inclusion follows another strong major tournament performance for the Real Madrid midfielder. Bellingham scored seven goals, which is the highest tally ever recorded by an England player in a single FIFA World Cup. This contribution helped the Three Lions achieve their best finish since their 1966 tournament victory. Despite other notable performances from England players, such as Bukayo Saka’s hat-trick against France and Declan Rice’s display in the third-place play-off, Bellingham was the only English player voted into the final XI.

Spain, the tournament champions, have three players in the Dream XI. Rodri, who captained Spain to their second World Cup title and won the Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player, anchors the midfield. He is joined by full-backs Marc Cucurella and Pedro Porro. Luis de la Fuente’s side completed an unbeaten tournament, culminating in their victory over Argentina in the final.

France, despite finishing fourth, also contributes three players to the Dream XI. Kylian Mbappé, the Golden Boot winner with 10 goals, occupies the right side of the attack. He became the first player to win the World Cup Golden Boot twice and surpassed Lionel Messi’s all-time World Cup scoring record with 22 career goals. Midfielder Michael Olise earned a spot after providing seven assists, a record for a single FIFA World Cup. Dayot Upamecano completes the French contingent in central defence.

Beaten finalists Argentina have two players in the Dream XI. Lionel Messi features on the left wing, having finished the tournament with eight goals and four assists. Defender Lisandro Martínez partners Upamecano in the heart of the defence.

Completing the front three is Norway striker Erling Haaland. Making his World Cup debut, Haaland helped his country reach a historic first-ever quarter-final appearance, scoring seven goals during the tournament.

Surprise Goalkeeper Selection and Other Awards

Perhaps the most unexpected selection in the Dream XI is the goalkeeper, Vozinha from Cape Verde. Instead of Golden Glove winner Unai Simón, England’s Jordan Pickford, or France’s Mike Maignan, fans voted for the 40-year-old veteran. Vozinha emerged as a breakout star during Cape Verde’s run to the Round of 32, where they narrowly lost 3-2 after extra time to eventual finalists Argentina. He kept clean sheets against Spain and Saudi Arabia, made 18 saves, and outperformed his expected goals against figure by 0.9. His performances also garnered significant attention on social media, with his Instagram followers reportedly surging from around 50,000 at the start of the tournament to 29.5 million by its end.

The Dream XI selections round off the individual honours for the tournament. Rodri received the Golden Ball as the competition’s best player, while Messi and Mbappé were awarded the Silver Ball and Bronze Ball, respectively. Mbappé’s 10 goals secured him the Golden Boot, surpassing Messi’s eight goals and four assists. Spain’s goalkeeper Unai Simón earned the Golden Glove after conceding only one goal in eight matches. The FIFA Young Player Award went to teenage defender Pau Cubarsí, and the Netherlands received the FIFA Fair Play Award for accumulating only three yellow cards throughout their campaign.

The shortlist for the best player award included nine stars: Rodri, Kylian Mbappé, Lionel Messi, Lamine Yamal, Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham, Erling Haaland, Ousmane Dembele, and Vozinha. Each nominee left a lasting mark on the tournament, from Golden Ball and Golden Boot winners to breakout stars and inspirational leaders.

Erling Haaland’s powerful presence and scoring instinct spearheaded Norway’s memorable run to the quarter-finals, where he finished among the leading scorers. Harry Kane, England’s captain, provided clinical finishing and intelligent link-up play, inspiring his side to a third-place finish with decisive performances and vital goals. Lionel Messi, at 39, guided Argentina to the final, continuing to captivate fans with his vision and control, earning him the Silver Ball and Silver Boot. Vozinha’s composure, sharp reflexes, and commanding presence were crucial for Cape Verde’s memorable campaign. Rodri, the heartbeat of Spain’s midfield, dictated the tempo with exceptional positioning and precise passing, leading his team to the title.
