Delhi: Abhinav Bindra calls for stronger education system amid student protests

'Some issues belong to all of us': Abhinav Bindra urges to 'strengthen education system' amid student protests

Calls for Education System Reform

Abhinav Bindra, India’s first individual Olympic gold medallist, has advocated for an education system that fosters confidence and rewards merit. His comments come amidst ongoing student protests concerning alleged irregularities in the NEET examination, which have reportedly led to multiple student suicides. Bindra, while not directly addressing the protests or calls for the removal of Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan, emphasised the importance of building a transparent and merit-based educational framework.

Writing on X, Bindra stated that certain issues, such as education, are universal and transcend political affiliations. He highlighted that a nation’s strength is reflected in the opportunities it provides for its youth, particularly through an education system that inspires confidence, values merit, and encourages curiosity. Bindra expressed hope for collective efforts to continually strengthen the education system, ensuring it remains a source of opportunity, innovation, and hope for future generations.

Echoing similar sentiments, Indian Grandmaster Nihal Sarin also voiced his concern regarding the immense pressure students face during crucial examinations. Sarin stated that he was deeply troubled by these pressures and that such concerns should not be disregarded. He stressed the need for accountability, noting that the pressure endured by young individuals appearing for critical exams is significant and cannot be ignored.

Appeals for Calm and Action

Amidst the intensifying protests in Delhi, former India cricketer Shikhar Dhawan has urged for patience and trust in national institutions. Dhawan emphasised the necessity of understanding the aspirations of the youth while maintaining faith in the system. In a social media post, he highlighted that the country’s youth are its future and their concerns must be acknowledged. He also noted that challenging situations require patience and confidence in institutions, expressing optimism for India’s continued progress.

Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the agitation, underscoring the importance of safeguarding students’ futures. He announced that fast-track courts would be established to ensure swift and stringent punishment for those involved in examination paper leaks. The Prime Minister stated on X that those compromising the future of the youth would face consequences and that authorities have been directed to take all necessary steps to protect students’ interests.

Protests have continued in various parts of the national capital, including Tolstoy Marg and Janpath, with students and activists intensifying their agitation against alleged irregularities in competitive examinations. Demonstrators have reportedly raised slogans and attempted to block traffic, leading to disruptions in key areas. Former India cricketer Yuvraj Singh also appealed for calm, advocating for a peaceful resolution through dialogue and stressing the need to ensure a safe, opportunistic, and supportive environment for students.

The protests are reportedly being led by the Cockroach Janata Party, with environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk showing support through an indefinite fast. Wangchuk, who was fasting at Jantar Mantar, was initially moved to Safdarjung Hospital due to concerns over his vital parameters. He was later transferred to Medanta Hospital in Gurugram after his wife approached the Delhi High Court for his transfer from the government-run hospital. On July 20, thousands of students attempted to march towards Parliament to protest against the irregularities in the NEET examination, but the march was halted by Delhi Police, who used tear gas and carried out a lathi-charge to disperse the protesters.
