Harare: Sooryavanshi’s record half-century powers India to victory over Zimbabwe

India secures T20I victory in Harare

India secured a seven-wicket victory over Zimbabwe in the opening T20 International of a three-game series in Harare. The win was largely propelled by a record-breaking half-century from teenage batsman Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and an impactful bowling performance from Mayank Yadav. India successfully chased down a target of 126 runs in 13.2 overs.

This victory marked a significant moment for India’s captain, Shreyas Iyer, as it was his first win leading the T20I squad. Iyer had previously faced a challenging start to his captaincy, experiencing losses in his prior seven matches during tours of Ireland and England.

Sooryavanshi’s impactful return

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, a 15-year-old, delivered a match-winning knock, scoring 50 runs off just 19 balls. This performance included his maiden international half-century, achieved in only 18 deliveries. His explosive innings saw him become the youngest player in men’s international cricket to score a fifty, surpassing a record previously held by Nepal’s Kushal Malla.

Sooryavanshi’s international career had a quiet beginning earlier in the month during India’s tour of England, where his scores of 14, 13, and 15 led to him being dropped for the final T20I, a series India ultimately lost. However, his return to the Harare Sports Club proved to be a turning point. This venue had previously seen him score 175 runs off 80 balls in the Under-19 World Cup final earlier this year.

After taking four deliveries to settle in, Sooryavanshi launched a counterattack, hitting four boundaries and four sixes against Zimbabwe’s bowling attack. His aggressive strokeplay effectively ended the contest within the Powerplay. He was eventually dismissed by Richard Ngarava one ball after reaching his half-century.

Following Sooryavanshi’s dismissal, Ishan Kishan contributed 35 runs, and captain Shreyas Iyer remained unbeaten with 28 runs, comfortably completing the chase.

Captain Iyer praises team’s performance

Captain Shreyas Iyer expressed his admiration for Sooryavanshi’s fearless approach to the game. “He is fearless, the way he approaches the innings is amazing. He possesses immense confidence when he steps onto the field,” Iyer stated after securing his first victory as India’s T20I captain.

Iyer also commended both his bowlers and batters for their execution of the team’s strategies. He described their performance as “Exceptional. They were tremendous in their execution. Can’t be more happier to get my first win.”

Explaining his decision to bowl first after winning the toss, Iyer mentioned, “I was anticipating the bounce and there was a decent amount of bounce. Exceptional start given by Mayank. Didn’t give them room.”

Mayank Yadav’s impactful return

Mayank Yadav made a successful return to international cricket, setting the tone for India’s bowling attack. He dismissed Brian Bennett with the very first ball of the match and finished with two wickets. Yadav consistently bowled at speeds exceeding 145 kmph, targeting the back of a length area and hurrying the batters with his pace. His second wicket came when Dion Myers failed to time his pull shot in the fifth over.

Prince Yadav also contributed with two wickets, helping to restrict Zimbabwe to a total of 125 for seven. Debutant Ashok Sharma and Ravi Bishnoi also delivered economical spells. Zimbabwe’s batting struggled against the Indian attack, particularly in the Powerplay, where they reached 26 for three. Despite efforts from Ryan Burl (26 runs), Wessly Madhevere (38 runs), and Tadiwanashe Marumani (27 not out), Zimbabwe was unable to set a more challenging target.

The match saw Zimbabwe’s captain, Sikandar Raza, caught at deep square leg while attempting to score against Shivam Dube, making it 32 for four in the eighth over.
