Norway edge Ivory Coast 2–1 to enter World Cup Round of 16

Norway secures progression to Round of 16

Norway has advanced to the World Cup Round of 16 after a 2-1 victory against Ivory Coast. The decisive goal came in the 86th minute from Erling Haaland at Dallas Stadium, shattering Ivory Coast’s hopes in the tournament. This win sets up a significant clash for Norway against Brazil in New York on Sunday.

The match saw Amad Diallo equalise for Ivory Coast after Antonio Nusa had opened the scoring for Norway in the 39th minute. Despite an early period where Ivory Coast appeared to have the upper hand, Norway managed to take control as the first half progressed, ultimately securing their progression in the competition.

Match dynamics and key moments

In the initial stages of the game, Ivory Coast showed promise, with Nicolas Pepe posing a threat on the right flank. Ghislain Konan also came close to scoring, driving into the penalty area before sending his shot into the side-netting. Yan Diomande delivered a searching pass to Pepe, whose mis-hit shot was cleared by the Norwegian defense.

Erling Haaland was relatively quiet during the early exchanges. However, as the first half neared its end, Norway began to assert dominance. A downward header from Haaland, following a cross from Alexander Sorloth, signaled a shift in momentum for Stale Solbakken’s side. Norway increased their tempo and maintained possession, leading to their first goal.

The breakthrough for Norway came when Martin Odegaard passed the ball to Nusa on the left. Nusa then cut onto his right foot and curled a shot past Yahia Fofana and into the top corner of the net. Haaland was denied a goal shortly after due to a last-ditch block, and Sorloth’s header from a subsequent corner went across the face of the goal.

Ivory Coast had their own opportunities, with Emmanuel Agbadou heading wide as the first half concluded. Ten minutes after the restart, Pepe’s effort was saved by Orjan Nyland, following an initial shot from Guela Doue that was blocked by Torbjorn Heggem.

The introduction of Amad for Christ Inao Oulai at the hour mark proved impactful. Amad first cleared Heggem’s goal-bound shot off the line before scoring the equalizer. He executed a quick one-two with Pepe, then evaded David Moller Wolfe and Sander Berge to strike a shot that bounced beyond Nyland, leveling the score.

Haaland’s late winner and path forward

The final say, however, belonged to Haaland. Substitute Oscar Bobb, a former clubmate of Haaland, played a pass to Patrick Berg inside the penalty area. Berg then set up Haaland, who scored into an open net with Fofana out of position. This goal in the 86th minute ultimately secured the victory for Norway.

In stoppage time, Nyland made a crucial save from Amad’s free kick, preserving Norway’s narrow lead and ensuring their advancement in the tournament. The Norwegian team celebrated their 2-1 triumph, reflecting the collective effort that led to their success against Ivory Coast.

Norway’s fans have been noted for their unique celebrations at this World Cup, often mimicking a rowing crew. This collective spirit was evident in the team’s performance, as they defended resolutely and overcame the physicality of Ivory Coast. The players joined their supporters in a rowing celebration after the final whistle, symbolizing their united effort.

The team’s initial play was characterized by too many square passes, which allowed Ivory Coast to gain confidence. The Elephants played with energy, while Norway’s defense was frequently tested due to an unprotected midfield. Despite these challenges, Norway found their rhythm and secured the win, setting up their next match against Brazil in New York.
