India faces selection dilemma over Vaibhav Sooryavanshi for England T20 series

How To Integrate Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Into India's T20 Squad - Rediff

Following recent losses to Ireland, the Indian cricket team is grappling with how to integrate Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, a 15-year-old batting prodigy, into the T20 squad for the upcoming series against England. The team management faces the challenge of balancing new talent with maintaining team stability and performance.

The unexpected defeats to Ireland have intensified discussions surrounding the team’s selection process. Despite public anticipation for Sooryavanshi’s inclusion, the team management had previously adhered to a process that saw established openers like Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma retain their spots after their performance in the T20 World Cup.

Calls for Sooryavanshi’s Inclusion

Legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has strongly advocated for Sooryavanshi’s immediate inclusion. Speaking on Aaj Tak, Gavaskar suggested that Sooryavanshi could have been picked for both games against Ireland, with Abhishek and Samson playing one game each. He emphasized that the upcoming five-match T20 series in England, beginning July 1, presents an ideal opportunity to feature the young talent.

Gavaskar asserted that Sooryavanshi must play from the first game in England, even if it means dropping out-of-form batters. He suggested fitting Sooryavanshi at number three, keeping both openers, or making other adjustments to ensure his participation. According to Gavaskar, playing Sooryavanshi in the first game could help shock England and provide India with a strong start to the series.

The series loss to Ireland has been described as a low point in Indian cricket history, attributed to overconfidence and casualness. One report indicated that the series was an ideal opportunity to give Sooryavanshi a taste of international cricket, and expressed hope that he would be played in the first game against England.

Reshaping the Batting Line-up

The team’s think-tank, led by coach Gautam Gambhir, must find a plausible solution for Sooryavanshi’s integration. If the combination of Samson and Abhishek is to remain undisturbed, other batters, such as Ishan Kishan, might need to shift down a slot in the order.

A potential new batting order could see Sooryavanshi at number three, followed by Kishan at number four, Shreyas Iyer at number five, Tilak Varma at number six, Shivam Dube at number seven, and Axar Patel at number eight. This arrangement assumes that Suryansh Shedge would be dropped from the first game against England.

Flexibility would be key for positions five to eight, depending on the match situation and the need for left-right batting combinations. If Shivam Dube bats at number seven, he would be expected to bowl four overs on most days, as Abhishek is the only other top-order player who bowls part-time left-arm spin usable in international games.

Difficult Decisions Ahead

The team management faces tough choices. If both the Samson-Abhishek pair and Sooryavanshi are to play, then either Ishan Kishan or Tilak Varma might need to be sacrificed to ensure the presence of five specialist bowlers and two all-rounders.

One logical, though potentially unpopular, solution suggested is to drop Samson. He scored 5 and was dismissed for a first-ball duck in two games against Ireland, appearing out of sync in bowler-friendly conditions where his technique was tested. Integrating Sooryavanshi without disrupting the bowling attack’s balance may require a difficult conversation with Samson, as landmark calls often necessitate hard decisions.

The five-match T20 series in England is scheduled to commence on July 1.
