The Karnataka government has announced a significant change in the SSLC examination by proposing a grading system for third language subjects, which is set to be implemented from the 2025-26 academic year. This initiative aims to alleviate academic pressure on students while promoting skill-based and language learning.
Under the new grading rules, students will receive grades instead of traditional marks in third language and National Skill Qualification Framework (NSQF) subjects. The grading scale will categorize performance as follows: ‘A’ for scores between 80% and 100%, ‘B’ for 50% to 79%, and ‘C’ for scores up to 49%.
Importantly, these third language and NSQF subjects will be treated as additional courses on the marks card and will not influence the overall pass or fail status of students. The overall SSLC examination pattern will remain unchanged, with six core subjects still carrying a total of 625 marks.
The notification regarding this proposed grading system is currently in the draft stage and is open for public objections and suggestions for a period of seven days. This move reflects the Karnataka government’s commitment to reducing the academic burden on students while encouraging a more holistic approach to education.
As the education landscape evolves, the introduction of a grading system for third language subjects may pave the way for a more inclusive and less stressful educational environment. Observers are keen to see how this proposal will be received by the public and whether it will lead to further reforms in the state’s educational policies.
