Martinez reflects on international future
Emiliano Martinez, the goalkeeper for Argentina, has indicated he is contemplating his future with the national team following their World Cup final defeat to Spain. The 33-year-old expressed his thoughts on social media, suggesting it might be “time to step aside” from international football.
Martinez’s comments came after Argentina’s 1-0 loss in extra time during the 2026 FIFA World Cup final. He shared an emotional message on Instagram, stating, “I dreamt we’d win it again, I dreamt of bringing it back to Argentina and making history once more.” He added that the pain was difficult to explain and that he needed to reflect on how to move forward.
The goalkeeper, known by his nickname “Dibu,” apologised to fans, saying, “I’m so sorry, I truly tried my best to help my country and my team-mates.” This statement has led to speculation that one of Argentina’s prominent players could be considering retirement from international duties.
A career of significant achievements
Martinez has been a key figure for Argentina, notably as a World Cup winner in 2022. During that tournament, he also received the Golden Glove award, recognising him as the outstanding goalkeeper. His contributions have solidified his place among Argentina’s notable goalkeepers, marked by 67 international appearances and numerous significant saves, including a memorable stop in the 2022 final against France.
His individual accolades extend beyond the World Cup. Martinez claimed the Yashin Trophy, awarded to the world’s best goalkeeper at the Ballon d’Or awards, in both 2023 and 2024. These awards underscore his consistent performance at the highest level of the sport.
In the recent 2026 World Cup, Martinez played every minute of Argentina’s eight matches. Throughout the tournament, he managed to keep two clean sheets while conceding eight goals. His performance in the final against Spain was particularly notable, despite the team’s eventual defeat.
Final performance and future considerations
The 2026 World Cup final saw Martinez deliver a remarkable performance, making 11 saves, which was the most by a goalkeeper in a World Cup final. He played through the tournament with a broken finger, an injury he had been managing since May, having delayed surgery to represent his country.
Martinez repeatedly thwarted Spain’s attempts, denying players like Nico Williams, Rodrigo De Paul, and Lamine Yamal with a series of spectacular saves. His efforts kept Argentina in contention for over 100 minutes of the match.
