Glasgow: Mirabai Chanu secures third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold

Commonwealth Games 2026 Day 4: Mirabai Chanu completes golden hat-trick as India adds 3 more medals in Glasgow

India experienced a successful day at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, securing one gold and two silver medals. This brings the country’s total medal count to four. Boxers continued their strong performances, and the men’s swimming relay team advanced to a final.

Mirabai Chanu was a standout performer on Day 4, earning her third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal. Additionally, Rishikanta Singh and Raja Muthupandi each contributed silver medals in weightlifting events.

Chanu’s Golden Hat-trick

Saikhom Mirabai Chanu solidified her position as a prominent Indian weightlifter by winning gold in the women’s 48kg category. The Tokyo Olympic silver medallist overcame an initial unsuccessful attempt to deliver a dominant performance, achieving a combined lift of 190kg.

She established a new Commonwealth Games record with an 85kg snatch. She then lifted 105kg in the clean and jerk, securing her title. This victory marks her third consecutive gold medal at the Commonwealth Games, following wins in Gold Coast in 2018 and Birmingham in 2022. This achievement brings her overall Commonwealth Games medal tally to four.

Her performance saw her shatter Commonwealth and Commonwealth Games records in the snatch, and set new CWG marks in both the clean and jerk and total lift. Her total lift of 190kg placed her significantly ahead of the silver medallist, Ruth Asuquo Nyong of Nigeria, who finished with 168kg.

Despite a nervous start with a failed opening snatch attempt at 82kg and a brief moment of uncertainty in the clean and jerk, Chanu recovered to secure her win. She opted to skip her third attempt in the clean and jerk after securing gold, with the Asian Games scheduled less than two months away.

Additional Weightlifting Success

Rishikanta Singh Chanambam earned a silver medal in the men’s 60kg event. The 28-year-old lifter successfully lifted 116kg, 119kg, and 121kg in the snatch, with his best effort matching the Commonwealth Games record. In the clean and jerk, he managed 143kg, finishing with a total lift of 264kg. Muhammad Anik bin Kasdan of Malaysia won gold with a Games-record total of 273kg, while Joshua Amunga Buoya of Kenya took bronze with 260kg.

Raja Muthupandi added another silver for India in weightlifting, competing in the men’s 65kg category. He lifted 126kg in the snatch and 160kg in the clean and jerk, achieving a combined total of 286kg. Muhamad Aznil Bin Bidin of Malaysia secured gold with a Commonwealth Games record total of 299kg, and Morea Baru from Papua New Guinea claimed bronze with 282kg.

Muthupandi’s silver medal marks a return to the Commonwealth Games podium, eight years after his debut in Gold Coast in 2018 where he finished sixth. He had missed Birmingham 2022 due to an injury-disrupted period.
