Manchester United have confirmed the signing of Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa on a five-year deal. The midfielder’s transfer involved meeting a release clause for the Belgium international. Tielemans expressed his pride in joining Manchester United, describing it as the culmination of years of dedication since he first developed a passion for football.
Tielemans, who has just helped Belgium reach the World Cup quarter-finals, will wear the number 18 shirt at Old Trafford. This number was previously worn by midfielder Casemiro, who departed the club when his contract concluded at the end of the season. Tielemans has spent the last three seasons with Aston Villa, having initially moved to the Premier League to join Leicester City in 2019.
Jason Wilcox, Manchester United’s director of football, commented on Tielemans’ arrival, highlighting his consistent performance as one of the most outstanding midfielders in the Premier League over the past seven years. Wilcox noted Tielemans’ technical qualities, ambition, and mentality, which are expected to contribute significantly to Manchester United. He also emphasised Tielemans’ exceptional consistency, which is anticipated to add composure, creativity, and leadership to the squad.
Tielemans’ career and recent form
Tielemans made his senior debut for Anderlecht at a young age before moving to Monaco in 2017. He has accumulated a significant number of appearances for both club and country, with 90 caps for Belgium. His career highlights include scoring Leicester‘s winning goal against Chelsea in the 2021 FA Cup final. Additionally, he scored Aston Villa‘s opening goal in their Europa League final victory over Freiburg in May.
During the recent World Cup, Tielemans scored an equaliser for Belgium against Senegal and later converted an extra-time winner from the penalty spot. His tournament concluded prematurely when he sustained an injury during the warm-up before Belgium‘s quarter-final match against Spain. Last season, Tielemans faced calf and ankle issues, which limited him to 35 appearances across all competitions for Aston Villa.

Despite these challenges, Tielemans contributed seven assists for Aston Villa last season. He also demonstrated strong passing statistics in the Premier League.
United’s transfer strategy and future plans
Tielemans’ signing follows the recruitment of fellow midfielder Andrey Santos and goalkeeper Karl Darlow. The move for Atalanta midfielder Ederson has been put on hold. Manchester United‘s approach to transfers has been described as disciplined, with an increased reliance on data analysis.
The club had previously considered signing Tielemans when he left Monaco in 2019 and again when his contract with Leicester expired in 2023, but opted against it on both occasions. This time, however, they proceeded with the transfer. Manchester United had prioritised strengthening their midfield areas this summer and had identified multiple targets.

The club remained calm when a planned move for Mateus Fernandes did not materialise, indicating that they had sufficient alternatives. The acquisition of Tielemans, who brings considerable Premier League experience, aligns with the club’s focus on players with both ability and a strong desire to play for Manchester United. Tielemans stated his ambition to help the club push for the biggest trophies in the coming years.
Aston Villa will experience a notable loss with Tielemans’ departure, especially considering the ruptured anterior cruciate ligament injury sustained by his compatriot Amadou Onana at the World Cup. Manchester United‘s director of football, Jason Wilcox, expressed delight in welcoming a player of Tielemans’ influence and experience, both on the pitch and within the dressing room, as the club continues to build a team capable of challenging for major honours.
The signing of Tielemans, along with Andrey Santos and Karl Darlow, marks a busy period for transfer announcements at Old Trafford. Tielemans is expected to compete with Kobbie Mainoo in a number eight role, while Santos is seen as a number six. The club anticipates adding at least one more experienced midfielder, capable of making an impact in the Champions League and likely to play a deeper role.
