India begins 2027 ODI World Cup preparations in England

'We were talking at nets about...': Shubman Gill opens up on 2027 World Cup planning with Virat Kohli

Planning for the 2027 World Cup

India captain Shubman Gill has confirmed that preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia are underway. The team’s focus on the upcoming tournament began with their current series in England. Gill, who assumed captaincy duties in the ODI format recently, emphasised that every series from this point forward will be crucial for working out combinations and preparing for the conditions expected in South Africa.

Gill highlighted the importance of the ODI World Cup, stating that it remains the most prestigious tournament in his view. He mentioned growing up watching 50-over cricket, which he considers an integral part of his childhood. The skipper believes that the 50-over format should remain unchanged, dismissing suggestions to reduce it to 40 overs.

Discussions regarding the 2027 World Cup have already taken place, with Gill revealing a conversation with Virat Kohli. The two players discussed potential squad combinations that would be best suited for conditions in South Africa. Their talks included identifying players who might not currently be in the team but could contribute in the future, specifically focusing on bowlers, all-rounders, and spinners.

Format and Player Considerations

Instead of altering the ODI format, Gill suggested that introducing more multi-nation tournaments, such as triangular or quadrangular series, could enhance its appeal for both players and fans. He recalled the enjoyment of watching past triangular series involving India, Australia, and Sri Lanka, proposing that playing against different teams in various venues would make the format more engaging.

The current series in England is seen as a vital step in this preparation. Gill noted that the mindset is to find combinations and adapt to wickets that are similar to those anticipated in South Africa. He stressed that this series holds significant importance for the team’s long-term planning.

The team faces challenges, including injuries to several all-rounders. Hardik Pandya is not part of the current squad, while Nitish K Reddy and Harshit Rana have also been sidelined due to injuries. Gill expressed that the team had hoped to give these players more matches before the World Cup to help them settle into their roles, particularly in high-pressure situations.

The return of Jasprit Bumrah to the ODI squad after being rested to manage his workload following the IPL 2026 has been welcomed. Gill hopes that Bumrah will have a successful series and that India will secure a victory in the series.

Experience and Team Dynamics

Gill also addressed the roles of experienced players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. He confirmed that both players remain central to India‘s batting lineup, providing valuable experience and skill to the team. Their contributions over the past decade in various conditions and tournaments have been highlighted as pivotal.

The top five batting positions, including Rohit, Gill, Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, and KL Rahul, appear settled. However, the fitness of all-rounders and the form of bowlers like Kuldeep Yadav are areas of concern. Mohammed Siraj remains a key part of the bowling plans alongside the returning Bumrah.

The India women’s team recently achieved a landmark 270-run victory over England in the first-ever women’s Test at Lord’s, a moment Gill described as a source of pride for the nation. This victory underscores the significance of playing and winning at historic venues.

Over the next 14 months, India is scheduled to play 12 ODIs, including series against England and New Zealand away from home, and against Sri Lanka and the West Indies in India. These matches will be crucial for finalising the main squad and backup options for the 2027 World Cup.
