England has claimed the top spot in the ICC Men’s T20I Team Rankings following a dominant 4-0 series victory over India. The series concluded with a decisive win in Southampton, where Jos Buttler and Harry Brook delivered significant performances.
The final match saw Jos Buttler score 131 runs off 64 balls, while Harry Brook contributed an unbeaten 95 runs off 45 deliveries. Their partnership for the second wicket reached 233 runs, setting a new record for any wicket in T20 Internationals. This strong batting display helped England post a total of 257/3 in their 20 overs.
India, in response, managed 201/8 in their 20 overs. Despite half-centuries from Ishan Kishan, who scored 56 off 35 balls, and Tilak Varma, who made 53 off 25 balls, India was unable to chase down the target, losing by 56 runs.
Dominant Series Performance
The series began with a match in Chester-le-Street affected by rain. Following this, England secured victories in the subsequent four games. This included a significant win in Nottingham, which marked India’s largest defeat in T20Is, and chasing down 159 runs in just 13.4 overs in Bristol.
The win in Southampton not only sealed the series whitewash but also ended India’s more than 1,600-day tenure at the top of the ICC T20I Team Rankings, a position they had held since February 2022. England’s skipper had previously stated that achieving the No. 1 ranking was a team objective.
The partnership between Buttler and Brook was particularly impactful in the fifth T20I. Buttler’s first 50 runs came off 34 balls, and his next 50 runs were scored in just 17 deliveries. Brook reached his half-century in 19 balls.

The duo hit a total of 16 sixes, with eight from each player, demonstrating their aggressive batting. Buttler executed a pull shot off Prasidh Krishna over fine leg, and also hit the pacer for a six over long-on. Brook, on the other hand, showed strong footwork against Axar Patel, lofting him for two sixes in an over that yielded 25 runs.
India’s Challenges
Under the new leadership of Shreyas Iyer, India has not secured a victory since their World Cup win in Ahmedabad earlier this year. The team’s performance in the series against England has led to a review by the BCCI.
India’s bowling attack faced considerable pressure throughout the series. In the final match, Prasidh Krishna dismissed Phil Salt early, but the visitors struggled thereafter. Axar Patel conceded 63 runs in his four overs, while Prince Yadav gave away 60 runs in his four overs.

The absence of Harshit Rana, who is out for the rest of the tour due to a grade 1 hamstring tear, led to the inclusion of Suryansh Shedge. Shedge conceded 39 runs in three overs, including 24 runs in one over. Prince Yadav also had a challenging over, giving up 21 runs.
The series defeat marks a significant moment for India, as they lost their No. 1 ranking in T20Is after holding it for 1601 days.
