England’s Dominant Chase
England secured a commanding nine-wicket victory over India in the fourth T20I at the County Ground, Bristol, to clinch the five-match series with an unassailable 3-0 lead. The hosts successfully chased down a target of 159 runs in just 13.5 overs, largely due to an unbeaten partnership between captain Harry Brook and opener Phil Salt. This decisive win marks England’s first bilateral T20I series triumph of two or more matches against India.
Brook led the charge, remaining unbeaten on 79 runs off 35 balls, an innings that included eight fours and four sixes. Salt provided strong support, also staying not out with 59 runs from 42 deliveries, featuring nine fours and one six. Their combined effort ensured that England reached the target with 37 balls to spare, leaving the Indian bowlers struggling to make further breakthroughs after an early wicket.
The chase began with Arshdeep Singh dismissing Jos Buttler for 8 runs in the second over, briefly offering India a glimmer of hope. However, this was quickly extinguished as Salt, building on his previous match-winning performance, and Brook took control. They capitalised on India’s bowling, particularly against Prince Yadav and Prasidh Krishna, to reach 62/1 during the Powerplay. Brook continued his aggressive play against the spin duo of Washington Sundar and Axar Patel, effectively sealing the contest in England’s favour.
Iyer’s Lone Stand for India
Earlier in the match, after winning the toss and opting to bat, India faced a familiar top-order collapse against England’s bowling attack. Despite the early struggles, captain Shreyas Iyer delivered a resilient performance, scoring an unbeaten 80 runs off 49 balls. His innings, which included four boundaries and five sixes, was crucial in guiding India to a total of 158 for 7 wickets, even as wickets fell around him.
Iyer demonstrated a mix of composure and aggression, particularly against leg-spinner Adil Rashid, against whom he scored 44 runs off just 16 balls. This made it the third-highest runs scored by an Indian batter against a single bowler in a T20I innings. He also formed a partnership of 53 runs with Shivam Dube, who contributed 22 runs. However, Dube struggled to accelerate, eventually perishing for a 23-ball 22, leaving Iyer to anchor the innings.

England’s bowlers maintained discipline throughout India’s innings. Jofra Archer finished with figures of 2 wickets for 20 runs, including the run-out of Axar Patel in the final over. Josh Tongue also chipped in with 2 wickets for 36 runs. Archer removed Vaibhav Sooryavanshi for 15 runs, while Tongue dismissed Ishan Kishan for 4 runs inside the Powerplay. Rashid then accounted for Abhishek Sharma, who was caught off his own bowling, leaving India at 48/3 inside seven overs.
Series Implications and Outlook
This defeat is particularly concerning for the reigning T20 World Champions, India, who have now lost back-to-back series within four months of their title triumph. Under captain Shreyas Iyer, this marks a fifth defeat in six matches, as he continues to search for his maiden victory as captain. India had previously suffered a 0-2 defeat to Ireland and now trail England 0-3, with the series opener having been washed out.
The comprehensive victory for England not only sealed the series but also marked a significant milestone, as they had not won a bilateral T20I series of two or more matches against India before this. India’s impressive record of winning 11 out of their previous 12 bilateral T20I series, with one drawn series against South Africa in December 2023, has now been broken. The final T20I of the series is scheduled to be played at Southampton on Saturday.
