Chelsea have reportedly reached a verbal agreement with Aston Villa for the transfer of Morgan Rogers. The deal is said to be worth £117 million, with personal terms already agreed for a six-year contract that includes an option for an additional 12 months. A medical examination for the player is anticipated to take place on Monday.
Rogers, who is 23, has expressed a desire to join Chelsea, influenced by the club’s project and the arrival of new manager Xabi Alonso. This transfer would mark a new record for Chelsea, exceeding the fee paid for Enzo Fernandez. It would also surpass the British record fee previously agreed between Manchester City and Nottingham Forest for Elliot Anderson.
Rogers’ journey to Chelsea
Rogers’ existing contract with Aston Villa was set to run until 2030, following new terms signed in November 2024. These terms extended his previous contract by a year and adjusted his salary to reflect his standing within Unai Emery’s squad. He initially moved to Villa Park from Middlesbrough in February 2024 for an initial fee, with an additional amount in add-ons. As part of that deal, Middlesbrough holds a 20 per cent sell-on clause.
The former West Bromwich Albion and Manchester City academy player has established himself as a prominent attacking midfielder in the Premier League over the last two seasons. During this period, he scored 31 goals and provided 29 assists in 125 appearances for Villa. In a recent campaign, Rogers contributed 14 goals and 12 assists across all competitions, a season in which Villa qualified for the Champions League and won the Europa League.
Rogers received his first senior call-up for England in November 2024 and has participated in all six of his country’s World Cup matches to date. He started in the final group-stage match against Panama and the subsequent defeat to Argentina. He is currently with the England squad, where he provided the assist for England’s only goal in the semi-final.
Tactical implications and squad dynamics
The acquisition of Rogers suggests a strategic move by Chelsea and Xabi Alonso to reinforce the squad ahead of the new Premier League season. Arsenal had also shown interest in Rogers, but he reportedly chose Chelsea as his preferred destination. This move highlights Chelsea’s ability to attract top talent despite missing out on European football last season.
Rogers’ versatility allows him to play in multiple attacking positions. New Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso, known for his tactical flexibility, previously utilized a 3-4-2-1 attacking system at Bayer Leverkusen. This system often featured wing-backs providing width and two No. 10s occupying half-spaces to feed a sole striker. Rogers’ skillset, particularly his dribbling ability and long-range shooting, could fit well into such a setup.
There is speculation about how Rogers will integrate with Cole Palmer, another key attacking player for Chelsea. Both players are capable of operating in various attacking roles and could potentially play together, depending on Alonso’s chosen formation. They have a history together, having progressed through Manchester City’s academy, and have have described each other as close friends in football.
The transfer of Rogers follows Youri Tielemans’ move to Manchester United. Villa has, however, invested in new talent, including Switzerland international Johan Manzambi from Freiburg, and are reportedly lining up Wolves’ Joao Gomes.
The deal for Morgan Rogers is expected to be finalized following his medical on Monday.
