വെളിച്ചെണ്ണ: Coconut Oil Prices in Kerala: Market Manipulation by Middlemen

വെളിച്ചെണ്ണ — IN news

In Kerala, coconut prices have dropped significantly, yet middlemen are selling them at inflated rates, causing a financial strain on consumers. As of April 29, 2026, the price of green coconuts has plummeted from 78 rupees per kilogram to 42 rupees, while dried coconut now costs 52 rupees per kilogram.

The price of copra has also decreased from 200 rupees to 150 rupees per kilogram. Meanwhile, coconut oil has seen a dramatic drop from over 500 rupees per liter to just 260 rupees. Farmers are now facing a severe financial crisis due to this price drop.

Middlemen in southern Kerala are reportedly exploiting price differences between northern and southern regions. In northern Kerala, green coconuts sell for around 40-42 rupees, while in the southern districts, they fetch between 65-70 rupees.

The situation has raised alarms among consumers and farmers alike. With increased production from Tamil Nadu contributing to the price drop in Kerala and export disruptions to the Gulf due to regional conflicts affecting availability, many are calling for government intervention.

The current heatwave has led to a sudden increase in coconut supply in the market. Observers note that this surplus could further complicate pricing dynamics as farmers struggle with low returns while consumers face rising costs.

The government is being urged to stabilize prices and support farmers who had previously enjoyed a ‘golden period’ before this downturn. As the market continues to shift, many are left wondering how long these inflated rates will persist amid such stark price disparities.
