Portugal and Croatia prepare for knockout stage
Portugal is set to face Croatia in a World Cup Round of 32 match at Toronto Stadium, Ontario, Canada. The match is scheduled for 7 pm (23:00 GMT). This fixture is expected to draw significant attention, with Portugal entering as favourites to advance.
Historically, Portugal has maintained a strong record against Croatia, having lost only one of their ten encounters across all competitions. In competitive matches, Portugal remains undefeated against Croatia, securing five wins and one draw.
The Opta supercomputer, after running 25,000 pre-match simulations, gave Portugal a 54.5 percent chance of winning within 90 minutes. Croatia’s chances of victory were rated at 20.4 percent, while 25.1 percent of simulations resulted in a draw after normal time, indicating the potential for extra time or penalties.
Ronaldo’s appeal to fans and recent milestones
Ahead of the crucial match, Cristiano Ronaldo has urged Portugal fans to create a supportive atmosphere, asking them to “make us feel at home.” His message was shared on Instagram, accompanied by a picture featuring a holding hands emoji and the Portugal flag. This call comes as Toronto has already experienced a surge of excitement with Ronaldo’s arrival, with hundreds of fans gathering to catch a glimpse of the Portugal captain.

Ronaldo recently achieved a significant milestone during Portugal’s group-stage campaign, making his 25th FIFA World Cup appearance. This achievement places him alongside German legend Lothar Matthaus for the second-most appearances in tournament history, with only Lionel Messi having played more World Cup matches.
The superstar also played a pivotal role in Portugal’s victory over Uzbekistan, scoring twice to secure the team’s first win of the tournament. These goals made him Portugal’s all-time leading scorer in FIFA World Cup history, surpassing the record previously held by Eusebio.
Other World Cup developments
Thursday’s schedule also includes other significant knockout matches. Spain will play Austria at Los Angeles Stadium at noon (19:00 GMT), and Switzerland will face Algeria at BC Place Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, at 8 pm (03:00 GMT on Friday).
Spain is considered a strong favourite against Austria, having been unbeaten in their last five meetings, with their last two encounters ending in four-goal victories for Spain. The Opta supercomputer estimated Spain’s chances of winning within 90 minutes at 70.6 percent across 25,000 simulations.

Switzerland is also favoured in their match against Algeria. While this will be their first competitive meeting, Switzerland previously won two friendly matches against Algeria, with scores of 2-1 in 1983 and 2-0 three years later. The supercomputer gave Switzerland a 49.5 percent chance of winning within 90 minutes.
Meanwhile, seven teams have already secured their spots in the Round of 16: Canada, Brazil, Paraguay, Morocco, Norway, France, and Mexico. England and the USA have also advanced, with England securing their place after a dramatic comeback victory against DR Congo, where Harry Kane scored two late goals.
The match between Portugal and Croatia holds additional emotional significance for Portugal, as it coincides with the first death anniversary of late striker Diogo Jota, who passed away in a road accident in Spain last year.
