Jaiswal-Dickwella banter goes viral during Galle Test

'Take Me To IPL': Jaiswal-Dickwella Banter Goes Viral

Banter on the Field

A moment of playful banter between India‘s Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sri Lanka‘s Niroshan Dickwella captured attention during the fifth day of the Galle Test. Jaiswal, positioned at square leg, repeatedly encouraged Dickwella to play aggressive shots, referencing the 80 runs he had scored in the first innings. This exchange occurred as Dickwella came to the crease, with India in a strong position to secure a victory.

Dickwella responded to Jaiswal’s prodding with a cheeky remark, suggesting that if Jaiswal wanted to see him hit sixes, he should “take him to the IPL.” Jaiswal then playfully promised to do so if Dickwella hit a six, further escalating the exchange. This conversation, which included Jaiswal pointing towards deep square leg and urging Dickwella to hit there, added an entertaining element to the match.

The full conversation between the two players saw Jaiswal urging Dickwella to show some shots, similar to his first innings performance. Dickwella initially questioned the need but then made his offer regarding the IPL. Jaiswal affirmed his commitment, stating, “We will, we will. 100%. Come on, hit him a six, I’ll take you to the IPL.”

Dickwella’s Dismissal and India’s Dominance

Despite the lighthearted exchange, Dickwella’s time at the crease was short-lived. In the same over, he attempted a slash shot, backing away from the stumps, and managed only a faint edge. The ball was caught by Rishabh Pant behind the stumps, leading to Dickwella’s dismissal for 10 runs. As Dickwella walked back to the pavilion, the Indian fielders gathered around Jaiswal, congratulating him and seemingly enjoying the outcome of his banter.

The wicket came after India fast bowler Prasidh Krishna delivered a series of bouncers to Dickwella. The Sri Lankan batter tried to attack the pacer but ultimately edged one of the short balls. This dismissal exposed Sri Lanka’s tailenders to the Indian bowling attack, further solidifying India’s position in the match.

The banter and subsequent dismissal were part of a dominant performance by India. The visiting team had set a target of 372 runs for Sri Lanka in the final innings. On Day 4, India had already secured 4 wickets in the final session, leaving them with 6 wickets to take on the final day of the opening Test.

Manav Suthar Seals Victory

While the banter provided a memorable moment, the match was ultimately decided by India’s strong bowling performance. Left-arm spinner Manav Suthar delivered a match-winning spell, playing a crucial role in India’s comprehensive 165-run victory. Suthar claimed a total of 10 wickets in the match, including figures of 6/55 in the second innings.

Suthar’s performance helped India bowl out Sri Lanka for 206 runs in their chase of 372. This victory gave India a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. Earlier on Day 5, Sri Lanka had shown some resistance in the morning session, with Dhananjaya de Silva and Sonal Dinusha scoring fifties, which helped nullify India’s spin attack for a period. However, India eventually broke through when Jadeja trapped Dhananjaya de Silva at short fine leg, bringing Dickwella to the crease.

Dickwella’s early dismissal for 10 runs, following the exchange with Jaiswal, significantly hampered Sri Lanka’s chances of mounting a strong resistance against the Indian side on the final day of the Test match.
