Reports of a wedding between Cristiano Ronaldo and Georgina Rodríguez led to thousands of fans gathering in the streets of Funchal, Madeira, on a recent Saturday, under the belief that the ceremony was taking place. However, the celebration ultimately belonged to a different couple.
Ronaldo himself reacted to the news with a sarcastic gesture, posting a laughing emoji in response to a social media post by a local newspaper. His sister, Elma Aveiro, questioned why people would assume Ronaldo would marry without a personal announcement.
Speculation in Madeira
Despite Ronaldo’s reaction, some in Madeira continue to speculate that his wedding to Georgina could still occur this summer. Rumours have been fuelled by reports of 25 taxis with tinted windows being booked, and other sources suggesting a wedding might take place in the coming days or next week.
Earlier reports from British and Portuguese media had indicated August 8 as a potential wedding date for Ronaldo and Rodríguez in Funchal, his birthplace. The Funchal Cathedral was mentioned as a possible venue for the ceremony, with the Savoy Palace Hotel, approximately one kilometre away, reportedly slated for celebrations.
The Savoy Palace Hotel reportedly had two full floors and several bar areas closed off for a private event, which guests were notified about. The hotel’s upper floors, known as “The Reserve,” offer exclusive amenities and separation from regular guests. Ronaldo and his family were reportedly seen at the property before the weekend.
Local reports also suggested that the Funchal Cathedral, a 16th-century landmark, had been reserved for a major wedding ceremony from 3 pm on a Saturday. The cathedral is a short drive from the Savoy Palace. No official confirmation was issued by either the church or Ronaldo’s representatives.
Ronaldo and Georgina have been together since 2016. He proposed in August 2022. Ronaldo has previously stated that his wedding would not be a large event, noting Georgina’s preference for an intimate ceremony. This has contributed to speculation about a private wedding.
Unconfirmed Guest List and Security Measures
While names like Jennifer Lopez and Kylian Mbappe have circulated as potential guests, their attendance has not been confirmed. The Grand Ballroom at the Savoy Palace can accommodate up to 1,000 guests, suggesting a potentially large gathering if the wedding were to occur there. The scale of reported security measures also reinforced this idea.
Previous speculation had placed the wedding at the Quinta da Regaleira estate in Sintra, but this location was reportedly ruled out due to public access constraints. Madeira, and specifically Funchal, was seen as offering a more controlled environment with personal significance for Ronaldo, given it is where he grew up and where the hospital he was born in is located near the Funchal Cathedral.
Ronaldo and Georgina have not provided any official confirmation regarding their wedding. The silence from their camp, combined with the reported hotel floor closures, cathedral booking, and security perimeters, has intensified the speculation in Funchal.
Crowds could once again gather in the streets of Funchal next weekend, awaiting further developments.
