Severe heatwave conditions have led to an early announcement of summer vacations across multiple Indian states for 2026. In Delhi, schools will close from May 11 until June 30, resulting in a lengthy break of 50 days.

Key dates for summer holidays:

Uttar Pradesh: May 20 to June 15 (40 days)

Bihar: June 1 to June 20 (20 days)

Rajasthan: May 17 to June 20 (34 days)

Haryana: June 1 to June 30 (30 days)

Chhattisgarh: April 20 to June 15 (56 days)

Andhra Pradesh and Telangana: April 24 to June 11 (48 days)

Odisha: Holidays started on April 27, 2026

West Bengal: Vacations are ongoing, with end dates expected soon

Parents like Renuka express their concerns, stating, “It has become difficult for parents to drop their children at Anganwadi schools and pick them up after half-day classes due to severe heatwaves.” The fear of heat-related illnesses has led many parents to keep their children home.

Anganwadi teachers have echoed these worries, saying, “Fearing heatwaves which may cause fevers and sunstroke, parents are not willing to send their children to Anganwadi Schools.” This situation reflects a broader trend as schools adapt their schedules amid extreme weather conditions.

Historically, early school closures in India are not uncommon during intense heatwaves. However, the scale of this year’s adjustments marks a significant response by state governments.

The recent announcement comes just ahead of the election results in Puducherry, where schools will close for one day. As states navigate both educational needs and public health concerns, the impacts of these decisions on students and families remain closely monitored.
