The political landscape in Assam has taken a dramatic turn as the Assam government has filed a petition in the Supreme Court challenging the Telangana High Court’s recent decision to grant anticipatory bail to Pawan Khera. This case has sparked significant controversy, particularly given its ties to allegations involving Himanta Biswa Sarma’s wife, Riniki Sharma.

Pawan Khera, a prominent member of the Congress party, was granted a one-week transit anticipatory bail by the Telangana High Court, a decision that has drawn the ire of Assam’s Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma. The case against Khera is seen by many as politically motivated, given the ongoing tensions between the ruling party in Assam and the opposition Congress party.

In a scathing critique, Rahul Gandhi, a senior leader of the Congress party, has labeled Himanta Biswa Sarma as “the most corrupt CM in the country.” Gandhi’s comments reflect a broader concern within the opposition regarding the use of state power to target political adversaries. “The present CM of Assam is the most corrupt in the country. He will not escape the law. His abuse of state power to harass his political opponents and critics is against the Constitution,” Gandhi stated.

Furthermore, Gandhi has expressed his support for Khera, emphasizing that the Congress party stands firmly with him during this legal battle. He has called for greater transparency and accountability in governance, insisting that the questions raised about the case must be thoroughly investigated. “The questions that are being raised have to be probed. Transparency, accountability of the law are the basis of our constitutional values,” Gandhi remarked.

The unfolding situation has drawn attention not only from political observers but also from legal experts, who are keenly watching how the Supreme Court will respond to the Assam government’s petition. The implications of this case could extend beyond Khera, potentially affecting the political dynamics in Assam and the broader region.

As the legal proceedings continue, both sides are preparing for what could be a protracted battle in the courts. Political analysts suggest that the outcome may set a precedent for how similar cases are handled in the future, particularly in politically charged environments.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding the next steps from the Supreme Court, but the ongoing tensions between the Assam government and the Congress party are likely to escalate as both sides brace for a legal showdown.

Kerala CM and Ministers Skip PM Modi Event Amid Political Tensions

“I had not received any official communication inviting him to the function and termed the move ‘political’ and ‘not befitting a democracy’,” stated P A Mohammed Riyas, the Public Works Department Minister of Kerala, after he, along with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and other ministers, skipped Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official event in Kochi on March 11, 2026.

The event was marked by the inauguration of various development projects, including the six-lane expansion of National Highway 66. However, it was overshadowed by a political row regarding the exclusion of Minister Riyas from the guest list.

State Ministers M B Rajesh and K Krishnankutty also did not attend the event, with Rajesh citing prior commitments in his constituency. “I am not attending the PM’s programme. Yesterday, I came to know that my name was included in the list,” he explained.

Riyas expressed his discontent over the situation, emphasizing that he had not received any invitation. He described the exclusion as politically motivated, raising concerns about democratic practices in the state.

General Education Minister V Sivankutty echoed Riyas’s sentiments, calling the exclusion of Riyas “shocking” and “politically motivated.” This sentiment reflects a growing tension between the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the central government led by the BJP.

In response, BJP leaders defended the invitation process, asserting that the Chief Minister was invited according to protocol. Rajeev Chandrasekhar, a BJP leader, stated, “As head of the state, the CM was invited in accordance with the protocol.”

However, BJP leader B Gopalakrishnan alleged that the state government was attempting to consolidate Muslim votes by boycotting the Prime Minister’s event, further complicating the political landscape.

The National Highway development project, which was inaugurated during the event, was revived only after the LDF government came to power in 2016, following the intervention of Chief Minister Vijayan.

As the political situation unfolds, the implications of this boycott may resonate beyond the immediate event, raising questions about the relationship between the state government and the central administration.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding any further developments or responses from the central government following this incident.
