“She corrected herself. She is not a member of the House. You even target my daughter. Ae bakwas karda yeh banda (this guy is talking nonsense),” Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann exclaimed during a tumultuous Labour Day session in the Punjab Assembly.

The session, intended to honor workers, quickly devolved into chaos as opposition members demanded an alcohol test for Mann. The call came after he confronted Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira for using a mobile phone during proceedings. This incident sparked heated confrontations between AAP and Congress MLAs.

Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan rejected the demand for an alcohol test, but the tension escalated. Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa supported the call, insisting that all legislators, including Mann, should undergo breath analyzer tests. “If left unaddressed, risks undermining public trust in this esteemed institution,” Bajwa stated.

As the debate intensified, BJP leader Sunil Jakhar added his voice to the fray, stating that if someone enters a temple or gurudwara under the influence of alcohol, it’s contempt and disrespect. Amidst this turmoil, the Congress staged a walkout from the House.

The Aam Aadmi Party government moved a confidence motion in the assembly and passed it unanimously despite the uproar. However, multiple walkouts followed from both BJP and Akali Dal MLAs as they joined their Congress counterparts in protest.

Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal accused Mann of appearing in the assembly ‘drunk’, further fueling the controversy. Aman Arora from AAP condemned these allegations as baseless: “The Congress has been making frivolous remarks, which is unfortunate and amounts to adding salt to the wounds of workers.”

The session was meant to pay tribute to Punjab’s working class on Labour Day but instead highlighted ongoing political tensions within the assembly. The atmosphere remains charged as officials have not confirmed whether further actions will be taken regarding these allegations.

Maharashtra Day 2026 will be celebrated with a grand parade at Shivaji Park on May 1, coinciding with Labour Day and Buddha Purnima. This special occasion marks the formation of the state of Maharashtra in 1960, making it a significant public holiday across India.

On this day, government offices, schools, and banks will close their doors to honor the rich cultural heritage of Maharashtra. The festivities will attract thousands to the streets of Mumbai, particularly around Shivaji Park, where dignitaries and police units will participate in the parade. With May 1 falling on a Friday, many citizens are looking forward to an extended weekend.

The historical context of Maharashtra Day is rooted in the Samyukta Maharashtra Movement, which advocated for the creation of a separate Marathi-speaking state. The movement culminated in the establishment of Maharashtra as we know it today. This year’s celebrations will not only commemorate the state’s formation but also reflect on its journey towards unity and progress.

Key details about Maharashtra Day:

Maharashtra Day is celebrated every year on May 1.

The day is officially recognized as Maharashtra Din since 1960.

A dry day is observed; liquor shops will remain closed.

Major tourist attractions in Mumbai will remain open but expect large crowds due to the long weekend.

Traffic restrictions may be enforced around Shivaji Park during the parade.

As people prepare for this important day, officials have emphasized that it serves as a reminder of Maharashtra’s cultural identity. One local leader remarked, “Maharashtra Day is a celebration of culture and strength.” Another echoed this sentiment by stating, “Proud to be part of Maharashtra, where courage and culture walk together.” Such expressions capture the spirit of unity that defines this occasion.

This year’s celebrations are expected to resonate deeply with citizens as they reflect on their shared history and aspirations for the future. As one participant put it succinctly: “Celebrate Maharashtra Day with pride in your heart and respect for its history.” The event promises to be not just a commemoration but also an inspiration for generations to come.

As May 1st approaches, India prepares to celebrate Labour Day, a day dedicated to recognizing the invaluable contributions of workers. This occasion serves as a reminder of the achievements and struggles of the working class, resonating with similar celebrations worldwide.

In 1889, the Second International established May Day to honor workers’ rights. The date quickly became symbolic, particularly for labor movements advocating for fair wages and better working conditions. In India, Labour Day is also known as International Labour Day, reflecting its global significance.

Over the years, various labor organizations have organized rallies and programs to raise awareness about workers’ rights. On May 1st, many state governments across India declare a national holiday. This allows workers to participate in events that celebrate their contributions to society.

The main objective remains clear: to honor the achievements of workers while fostering unity among them. Events typically include speeches from labor leaders and community figures who emphasize the importance of solidarity.

In recent years, discussions around workers’ rights have gained momentum. Issues such as fair wages and safe working conditions are at the forefront of these conversations. As organizations mobilize on this day, they aim not just to celebrate but also to push for necessary reforms.

The atmosphere on Labour Day is vibrant with energy. Workers gather in cities across India, united by a common cause—recognition and respect for their labor. This collective spirit echoes through the streets during rallies and marches.

As we look toward May 1st, it’s crucial to reflect on what Labour Day represents for millions. It’s not just a day off work; it symbolizes a commitment to improving lives through collective action. The struggle for workers’ rights continues, but this day allows for a moment of celebration amid ongoing efforts.

With various programs planned nationwide, communities come together to honor those who contribute tirelessly to nation-building. The next Labour Day will mark another chapter in this ongoing journey toward justice and equality for all workers.
