The house belonging to the late J. Jayalalithaa has been sealed by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) due to unpaid property tax dues that have accumulated since 2017, totaling ₹1.6 crore before waivers.

Despite efforts to recover the dues, the outstanding amount has been reduced to approximately ₹83 lakh after waivers were applied. The property, categorized as ‘Commercial’, has been rented by businessman Vijay Mallya, yet it remains registered under Jayalalithaa’s name in GHMC records.

In May 2020, the Madras High Court declared Jayalalithaa’s nephew and niece as her legal heirs, which has added a layer of complexity to the financial obligations tied to her estate. The GHMC issued a ‘Red Notice’ due to the non-payment of dues, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.

As of now, the outstanding dues amount to ₹82.91 lakh after rebates under the One-Time Settlement scheme, which offers a 90% waiver on accumulated interest for property tax arrears. However, no payments have been made despite repeated attempts to resolve the issue.

The property will remain under GHMC custody until the outstanding dues are cleared, leaving the heirs in a precarious position regarding their inheritance. Observers are closely watching how the heirs will navigate this financial burden and whether they will take steps to settle the dues.

The ongoing property tax dispute not only highlights the financial challenges faced by the estate but also raises questions about the management of high-profile properties in Hyderabad. As the situation develops, further details remain unconfirmed regarding the heirs’ plans to address these significant financial obligations.
