The new Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) system allows vehicles to pass through without stopping. Instead of cash payments, the system utilizes AI cameras and sensors to scan vehicle number plates and FASTags. As Nitin Gadkari, the Minister of Road Transport and Highways, stated, “Now you will not have to stand in long queues at toll plazas or stop your vehicle.”

Toll payments will be automatically deducted from linked bank accounts or digital wallets. This shift to cashless transactions means that FASTag or UPI will soon become mandatory at all toll plazas. Drivers must ensure their FASTag is active and linked to their bank account; otherwise, penalties will apply for those without valid FASTags or insufficient balance.

In addition, QR codes will be made available for UPI payments if a FASTag fails. The government’s goal is clear: make the highway network completely cashless and minimize human intervention. As Gadkari noted, “The aim is to make travel so smooth that drivers can reach their destination without stopping.”

The current system requires vehicles to halt at barriers for payment—a process that will soon become obsolete. Entry to toll plazas may even be restricted for repeated violations of these new rules.

While this initiative promises enhanced efficiency for drivers, uncertainties linger regarding its implementation across all national highways. Officials have not confirmed how quickly these changes will be rolled out nationwide.
