Chandrikapersad Santokhi, the former President of Suriname, passed away on March 31, 2026, at the age of 67. His death marks the end of a significant chapter in Suriname’s political history, where he served as president from 2020 to 2025, following a tumultuous period under the leadership of former dictator Desi Bouterse.
During his presidency, Santokhi was known for his efforts to stabilize a bankrupt nation, implementing an economic recovery plan supported by the International Monetary Fund (IMF). His leadership was not without challenges, as he faced widespread protests demanding his resignation due to soaring fuel and electricity prices.
Before ascending to the presidency, Santokhi held the position of Minister of Justice and Police from 2005 to 2010, where he earned the nickname ‘The Sheriff’ for his commitment to law enforcement. Notably, he led the investigation into the 1982 killings of political opponents, a dark chapter in Suriname’s history that claimed the lives of 15 individuals.
Santokhi’s roots were deeply intertwined with Indian culture, reflecting the heritage of 27% of Suriname’s population. His oath-taking ceremony in 2020 was delivered in Sanskrit, a gesture that resonated with many in the Indian diaspora. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences, stating, “Deeply shocked and saddened by the sudden demise of my friend and the former President of Suriname, Mr. Chandrikapersad Santokhi Ji. This is not only an irreparable loss to Suriname but also to the global Indian diaspora.”
His contributions to Suriname were acknowledged by various leaders, including Rob Jetten, who remarked, “As President, and in his other roles, he meant a great deal to Suriname.” Jennifer Geerlings-Simons also noted that “his years of service in various public functions will be remembered.”
Despite his efforts to bring stability, Santokhi was denied a second term in the May 2025 general election, a reflection of the complex political landscape he navigated. His legacy, however, remains significant, particularly in the context of Suriname’s ongoing struggles with economic and social issues.
