Government Response to LPG Supply Challenges

The ministry has prioritised domestic LPG supply to households and introduced a 25 day inter-booking period to avoid hoarding/black marketing. This statement from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas underscores the urgency of the situation as the government seeks to address the pressing needs of households amid rising global tensions impacting fuel supplies.

In light of recent disruptions, the government has ordered oil refineries to increase LPG production specifically for domestic use. This directive comes as the conflict in West Asia has begun to affect the global fuel supply chain, leading to heightened demand for LPG and subsequent production orders from the government.

The Ministry has also implemented a 25-day inter-booking period for LPG refills. This measure aims to prevent hoarding and black marketing, which have become significant concerns during periods of supply instability. By regulating the booking process, the government hopes to ensure a more equitable distribution of LPG to households.

Despite these efforts, challenges remain. Reports indicate that LPG supply disruptions have caused refill delays ranging from 2 to 8 days in Mumbai. The situation is exacerbated by the complete halt of commercial LPG cylinder supplies, which has severely impacted hotels and restaurants in the region.

P C Rao, a representative from the hospitality sector, noted, “Only about 10% of hotels and restaurants in Bengaluru received their LPG supply today.” This stark statistic highlights the difficulties faced by businesses reliant on LPG for their operations, as they struggle to cope with the ongoing supply challenges.

To further manage the situation, a committee consisting of three Executive Directors from Oil Marketing Companies has been established. This committee is tasked with reviewing LPG supply requests from non-domestic sectors, ensuring that essential services such as hospitals and educational institutions receive prioritized supplies of imported LPG.

As the government continues to navigate these challenges, the focus remains on stabilizing the domestic LPG supply for households while addressing the needs of critical sectors. The ongoing geopolitical tensions and their impact on the global fuel supply chain will likely influence future decisions regarding LPG production and distribution.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding the long-term implications of these measures, but the government’s proactive approach reflects a commitment to ensuring that domestic needs are met during this turbulent period.
