The recent concerns surrounding the LPG gas shortage in India have left many citizens wondering: is there really a shortage of LPG? The answer, according to government officials, is a resounding no. Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary (Marketing & Oil Refinery) at the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, stated, “There is no shortage of LPG at any distributorship.” This assertion comes amidst a backdrop of heightened panic ordering, which saw the demand for LPG cylinders spike to 89 lakh, before settling back down to 50 lakh.
To address the situation, India’s domestic refinery production has been ramped up significantly, with a reported increase of 40 percent. This surge has brought the daily LPG output to an impressive 50 thousand metric tonnes. Moreover, oil companies are successfully delivering over 50 lakh cylinders every day, ensuring that the supply chain remains robust. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has also confirmed that all retail fuel outlets have sufficient supplies of LPG to meet current demands.
Despite these reassurances, the panic among consumers has been palpable. The LPG prices across major cities reflect the ongoing concerns, with prices standing at ₹913 per cylinder in Delhi and Mumbai, ₹942 in Kolkata, ₹929 in Chennai, ₹918 in Bengaluru, and ₹955 in Hyderabad. The fluctuations in prices can often exacerbate fears of shortages, leading to further panic buying.
Historically, India has relied heavily on imports for its energy needs, meeting more than 40 percent of its crude imports and 90 percent of its LPG imports from West Asian countries. This dependency can create vulnerabilities in the supply chain, particularly during times of geopolitical tension or global supply disruptions. However, the government has reassured the public that India has sufficient petrol, diesel, and LPG stock for nearly 60 days, with a total storage capacity of about 74 days for crude oil and fuel.
As the situation evolves, the government has urged citizens not to be misled by what they describe as a “deliberately mischievous, coordinated campaign of misinformation.” Officials emphasize that every Indian refinery is currently operating at over 100 percent utilization, which underscores the commitment to meeting the nation’s energy needs.
