Iranian Women’s Football Team Faces Uncertainty After Asian Cup Exit
The Iranian women’s football team has split between Malaysia and Australia after their exit from the Women’s Asian Cup, with seven members granted humanitarian visas in Australia.
Six players and one staff member chose to remain in Australia, accepting the offer of asylum after some players remained silent during the Iranian national anthem before their opening match.
Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman, Esmaeil Baqaei, urged the team to return home, stating, “Don’t worry — Iran awaits you with open arms.” Meanwhile, Australian Minister Tony Burke expressed support for the players, saying, “They are welcome to stay in Australia, they are safe here, and they should feel at home here.”
Before their departure, two additional members of the Iranian women’s football team were granted asylum in Australia, bringing the total number of players seeking refuge to five.
The team faced immense pressure during the tournament due to the ongoing geopolitical tensions following US and Israeli attacks on Iran, which have heightened scrutiny on the players’ safety.
In total, 21 players are expected to return to Iran, while one player changed her mind about seeking asylum. Concerns remain about the safety of those returning, as Iran’s Prosecutor General’s Office stated, “These loved ones are invited to return to their homeland with peace and confidence.”
FIFPRO, the global representative organization for professional football players, is actively advocating for the safety of the Iranian players, with Beau Bush stating, “We are making sure that FIFA and the AFC are putting as much pressure as possible on the Iranian authorities, outlining their expectations around safety to make sure they’re not met with any retribution or retaliation.”
The Iranian women’s football team participated in the Asian Cup 2026 in Australia amid these geopolitical tensions, highlighting the complex intersection of sports and politics.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding when the players will leave Malaysia and where they will travel to next.
