Recent Price Increases
The price of a 14.2-kg domestic LPG cylinder in India has seen a significant hike, increasing by 60 rupees due to geopolitical disruptions affecting fuel supply. The new price in Delhi is now set at 913 rupees, while in Mumbai, it stands at 912.50 rupees. Other metropolitan areas have also experienced similar increases, with Kolkata’s price reaching 939 rupees and Chennai’s at 928.50 rupees.
In addition to the domestic price hikes, commercial LPG gas cylinders have also seen an increase of 115 rupees. These changes have raised concerns among various stakeholders, particularly in the hospitality sector.
Impact on the Hospitality Sector
An acute shortage of commercial LPG cylinders has disrupted operations in the hospitality sector, particularly in major cities like Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Chennai. Reports indicate that at least 20 percent of hotels and restaurants in Mumbai have had to shut down temporarily due to the unavailability of these essential gas supplies.
The Indian Hotels and Restaurants Association (AHAR) has voiced its concerns, stating, “Despite being a basic operational requirement for restaurants and hotels, commercial cylinders are becoming increasingly difficult to obtain through proper channels.” This shortage is not only affecting daily operations but also the overall service quality in the hospitality industry.
Government Response
In response to the ongoing crisis, the Indian government has taken steps to mitigate the situation. The LPG booking period has been extended from 21 days to 25 days to curb hoarding and ensure fair distribution. Furthermore, the government has invoked the Essential Commodities Act to prioritize the supply of natural gas.
Officials have emphasized the need for a stable supply, stating, “The supply of natural gas must be treated as priority allocation and shall be maintained subject to operational availability to one hundred percent of their average past six-month average gas consumption.” This measure aims to stabilize the market and ensure that essential services can continue to operate.
Looking Ahead
While these measures may provide some relief, the exact impact of ongoing geopolitical conflicts on future gas cylinder prices remains unclear. Details remain unconfirmed, and stakeholders are closely monitoring the situation as they navigate these challenging circumstances.
